Yet again, I am unable to make a good guess as to what film will be number one this weekend. I would have thought that Independence Day: Resurgence would walk away as the winner this weekend, but I was horribly wrong. Finding Dory, another Disney juggernaut, obliterated the new release. Central Intelligence, meanwhile, came in at number 3, which I found surprisingly enjoyable. I highly recommend checking this movie out, as both The Rock and Kevin Hart are hilarious in it. Coming it at number four was The Shallows, the movie featuring a stranded surfer (Blake Lively) dealing with a Great White Shark. This made about $16.8 million, which is pretty good considering this movie did not cost a lot to make.
Here are the top 10 movies over the weekend:
- Finding Dory – $72,959,954
- Independence Day :Resurgence: $41,039,944
- Central Intelligence – $18,241,416
- The Shallows – $16,800,868
- The Conjuring 2 – $7,702,194
- Free State of Jones – $7,572,206
- Now You See Me 2 – $5,593,399
- X-Men: Apocalypse – $2,489,881
- TMNT: Out of the Shadows – $2,464,351
- Warcraft – $2,247,420
Congratulations to Austin Baroudi who made it within $5 million for a total of eight extra bonus points towards our Summer Movie Draft Giveaway! Daisy and William Landefeld also managed to walk away with 3 bonus points for guessing Finding Dory would be number one this weekend!
Looking to This Weekend
We have three new releases coming out this weekend. The Purge: Election Year features the 3rd movie in a trilogy, which has Frank Grillo starring as the hero of this horror/action film about the Purge—one night a year where the government has sanctioned all crimes as legal for 12 hours. In this 3rd movie, Grillo’s character is trying to protect a government official who is trying to outlaw purging, on the day of the Purge.
Also coming out this weekend is The BFG, which is not what Doom players think it is—but stands for The Big Friendly Giant. A young girl seems to make friends with a giant, who is actually dealing with giant problems of his own.
Finally, we have The Legend of Tarzan, which stars Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie, and Samuel L. Jackson. This features a “domesticated” Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgard) who returns to the jungle, and seemingly has to save Jane (Margot Robbie) from men who have taken her hostage.
I think picking a number one this weekend is going to be very difficult, as we have the behemoth Finding Dory which could easily take number one again, as it could still have a less-than 50% drop off. Meanwhile, any of these movies could be number one for the weekend too. I think I am going to go out on a limb (pun intended) and say that Legend of Tarzan comes in at number one. I think Finding Dory will be a close second, but I feel like I have seen a lot of advertising done for Legend of Tarzan. I also think that Margot Robbie has been doing well, and could bring people in to see the film. I think I will make my guess at $50 million for Legend of Tarzan.
