Episode Recap of The Walking Dead, Season 4 Episode 8: Too Far Gone
- After the Governor kidnaps Hershel and Michonne, he talks his group into trying to take the prison. Lilly isn’t very happy about the plan. Hershel suggests to the Governor that their two groups can share the prison, but the Governor disagrees.
- The Governor has Lily and Meghan go by the river, where it’s safe, then bids them farewell. Maggie takes care of Glenn, who is still recovering. Daryl has it out with Rick about Carol. Sasha thanks Bob for helping save her life.
- Before Rick and Daryl have a chance to talk to Tyreese about Carol, he shows them a mutilated rat he found. Just then, they hear an explosion, and run outside to see the Governor’s heavily armed group with an army tank.
- The Governor shows them that he has Hershel and Michonne, and demands to talk to Rick, despite there being a council now. While Rick talks to the Governor, who says they must leave by sundown, Daryl hands out guns.
- While digging in a mound of mud, Meghan uncovers a walker, who bites her. Lily shoots it. Instead of going to the bus, Lizzie and the other children decide they should get guns. Rick suggests living in different cell blocks, but the Governor declines.
- The Governor uses a sword to chop Hershel’s head off, then gunfire breaks out from both sides. Rick hides behind a bus for cover. Hershel tries to crawl away, but the Governor finishes chopping off his head. Tara withdraws from the fighting. Lily brings Meghan’s dead body to the Governor, who shoots Meghan in the head.
- The Governor’s people move in with the army tank and break down the fences. Maggie leaves Beth at the bus while she goes to get Glenn. Rick and the Governor get into a fist fight, while the gunfire continues. When Maggie and Glenn get on the bus, Beth is not there because she went to get Judith, so Maggie leaves to look for her.
- Bob gets shot. Maggie, Sasha, and Bob see the bus drive away. Lizzie saves Tyreese by shooting Alisha in the head. The Governor begins to strangle Rick, but Michonne comes up behind him and stabs him clean through with the sword, then leaves him to die. Daryl throws a grenade into the army tank through the barrel of the main gun, then shoots Mitch with an arrow. Daryl and Beth run off together.
- Rick finds Carl unharmed. When they go to look for Judith, they find her carrying case empty and bloody, then both cry and hug each other over the loss of her. Lilly finishes the Governor off by shooting him in the head. The walkers move in and take over the prison.
Violet’s Thoughts on the Season 4 Midseason Finale of The Walking Dead: Too Far Gone
Finally! The showdown we’ve been waiting for between Rick and the Governor! This showdown was teased at the end of Season 3, but as you’ll recall, that season finale resulted in nothing more than the Governor driving off after executing almost all of his people. I was worried that this would be yet another tease, and that this episode would merely lead up to the showdown, making us wait until after the break to see what happened. Thankfully, that was not the case! This was a very action packed episode that was worth the wait. So far, it doesn’t appear that Rick’s side suffered any casualties of major characters – other than the devastating loss of Hershel. It was very sad to see him go, but you could tell it was coming. Not sure that he would have been able to still crawl away like he did though…
Of course, there’s also the question of Judith. Is she alive or dead? Rick and Carl seemed to think she was dead, judging by their emotional reactions, but I’m not so sure. If the walkers had eaten her, or if she was shot, there would still be body parts in the carrying case. Instead, it was empty. Yes, it was bloody too, but there was so much going on that the blood could have come from anyone. The last time we saw Judith, Mika was carrying her in the carrying case. At the end of the episode, Lizzie and Mika run off in the opposite direction of the bus, as Tryeese points out, which suggests that they have stashed the baby somewhere safe, and are going to retrieve her. Also, as many people have pointed out, Judith did not show up on the “In Memoriam” segment on the episode of Talking Dead that followed the midseason finale, which is another sign that she is in fact not dead.
So where does this leave us for the second half of Season 4? Rick’s group has split off into several different groups.
1) Rick and Carl
2) Daryl and Beth
3) Maggie, Sasha, and Bob
4) Glenn and the bus passengers
5) Tyreese, Lizzie, Mika, and the other children, and probably Judith
6) Michonne, who I’m guessing will be alone for at first, but eventually will find Tara, and maybe Lilly as well
Will any of the groups find each other and join up again? Only time will tell. There will definitely be some interesting dynamics going on. There are still other issues to address, such as the fact that Tyreese still doesn’t know that Carol is the one who killed Karen. Maybe his group will run into Carol along the way. Another issue is that we still don’t know who was feeding the rats to the walkers, and why. Bob was acting suspicious when Sasha thanked him for helping save her life, seeming like he couldn’t accept her thanks, as if he had done something which made him undeserving of her gratitude. Although, this could be because he still feels guilty about picking up booze at the clinic when they went on the medicine run. In any case, Bob has been shot, which is an issue that he, Maggie, and Sasha will have to deal with immediately.
I really enjoyed the first half of Season 4 (well, the Governor episodes not so much), so here’s to hoping that the second half is just as good, if not better!

This episode was crazy. The whole scene with Hershel was brutal. It’s interesting to look back at this episode since it was the point when everyone scattered in different directions.
what i liked about this episode is that it contained a lot of action and the fight that i think everyone was waiting to see. not going to lie, it was great to see the governor get what he deserved. he was all the more deserving after the hack job he did to hershel. also daryl dealing with the tank so nonchalantly was quite cool.
