Episode Recap of Legends, Season 1 Episode 8: Iconoclast

Hani Jabril is taken into custody. We see a flashback where Aaron Rawley and Ahmed Hassan watch as they fly the drone into Prince Abboud’s car and it explodes. In the present, Aaron returns to his apartment and places a phone call to a man named Porter, who works for Arcadia, who confirms that the money has been wired and thanks Aaron for his service. Then Hassan sneaks in and strangles Rawley, then injects something between Rawley’s toes,which causes Rawley to convulse. He picks up Rawley’s phone and tells Porter, “It’s done.”

Gates’ superior explains to him that no one will ever know of Rawley’s involvement, considering that he worked for the State Department, and tells Gates to find out who did this and fast – off book.

Maggie insists that Hani Jabril didn’t do it. Gates tells Maggie to dig into Rawley’s life, and Rice says he’ll start investigating him.

Meanwhile, Crystal and Special Agent Walter Pierce are questioning Hani Jabril at the JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force). She maintains her innocence, despite the fact that drone piloting software was found on her phone. Crystal tells Hani that she is in danger of being extradited to Saudi Arabia to stand trial. Hani explains that Aaron Rawley gave the phone to her because he wanted to help her cause. As Gates escorts Hani to be transported, she runs into Martin, who she is upset at for lying to her about who he was.

Martin and Rice go to the apartment where Rawley had been staying and find Rawley’s dead body hung in the closet. But Martin isn’t fooled by the staged suicide, and goes right to the injection site between Rawley’s toes. They find a typed suicide note in Rawley’s pocket.

Back at the office, Gates and Crystal meet with the State Department, who asserts that they will cover up Rawley’s involvement and blame everything on Hani Jabril, for matters of national security. Crystal objects, but they don’t budge.

Martin, Rice, and Crystal meet to discuss the case. Maggie comes in and tells them that Rawley used to work for an American oil company that had a huge contract for Saudi oil rights, but the company was bought by Arcadia. After the sale, Prince Abboud gave the oil rights to a Saudi company instead. The team theorizes that the Prince met with Arcadia to negotiate a settlement because Arcadia wanted the oil rights – and Abboud had to be removed. To get more info, Maggie needs to hack into Arcadia’s database, and says she’ll use spyware.

However, Maggie personally goes over to Arcadia with a fake electronic copy of a subpoena. She gets a guy to download the data for her. She brings it back, and displays her findings, including wire transfers and scheduled payments. But Gates points out none of this is admissible in court since it was obtained illegally. Martin comes up with the idea of using the Sebastian Egan Legend to write articles about Prince Fayeen to create a massive scandal – but they’ll have to catch him doing something illegal. Martin’s plan: to make Prince Fayeen try to kill him.

Martin goes to Joust magazine in Legend as Sebastian Egan to speak with the publisher, Julian Drake, who is well aware of Martin’s Legend. It seems that Martin gives him tips, and Julian writes and publishes articles in Egan’s name. Martin spins a story for Julian wherein Prince Fayeen conspired to kill Prince Abboud and conspired to kill Hani Jabril as well, saying that Prince Fayeen didn’t like that Prince Abboud had met with Hani Jabril and was leaning toward giving women the right to vote. Martin’s goal in publishing the article is to see if they’ll come after him to try to kill him.

The first article is published, and Prince Fayeen calls Porter to angrily complain. Porter advises him to call his publicist.

Faris Nadir with CNB World Service comes by to warn Sebastian that a source tells him that there will be an attempt on his life.

Back at the FBI, Maggie figures out that Nadir went to boarding school with Prince Fayeen, and it was more of a threat than a warning. Agent Malloy stops by to reprimand Martin for leaking classified information in the article published under Egan’s name. But they remind her that Martin’s identity as the Egan Legend is protected by law.

Sebastian meets with Nadir in a parking garage, and tells him that he has hard proof that Prince Fayeen conspired with Arcadia to assassinate Prince Abboud. Sebastian gives Nadir a flash drive with the evidence of the bank transfers connecting Fayeen to Arcadia and tells him to run with it if anything happens to him. However, Sebastian tells him that he’s given the info to others as well. He tells Nadir that the story drops on Monday – 3 days away. He tells Nadir that he’s flying to San Francisco for an interview, and then coming back that night, traveling under an alias.

Maggie tells Crystal that she’s been digging into Martin’s life. It seems that his pre-2004 life is a fabrication, as she has found several discrepancies, and is unable to source the contact for any of his assignments before then – which means they don’t exist. Maggie tells Crystal that something is being covered up, and that if she were to create a Legend for a DCO agent, it would look like Martin’s life. Crystal tells her to keep this between the two of them.

Porter meets with Prince Fayeen and relays what Nadir told them regarding his meeting with Egan. Porter says that even if they kill Egan, the information with still get out. Fayeen’s assistant says they just need to meet with Egan to convince him that publication is not in his best interest, and says that Egan won’t be in the mood to write anything once he’s finished with him. They have figured out the alias he is using: George Holden.

Martin plans to pretend he is returning to Los Angeles from San Francisco, after which he believes he’ll be kidnapped within 24 hours. The FBI sticks a tracker in him so they’ll know his whereabouts. Martin doesn’t think they’ll kill him at first, because they’ll want to know who else he gave the intel to.

Martin arrives at the airport and goes with the driver holding up his alias. Martin’s glasses have a camera in them, and Maggie uses facial recognition software to determine that the driver is Bashir Al-Kanazer . Crystal texts Martin that the driver is hostile. Rice and Crystal follow, but Bashir starts driving erratically, and Crystral realizes that he’s looking for a tail. They wait him out as he drives in a circle, and then runs a red light. Rice and Crystal try to follow as Maggie guides them. The limo, no longer in their sight, then drives into the back of a truck, and Crystal and Rice have no idea where it went. To make matters worse, the tracker’s signal is being blocked. Gates orders the area to be locked down with the help of LAPD.

Bashir puts a hood over his head and takes him to a warehouse, where he is tied to a chair. When the hood is removed, Bashir begins to beat him up, and demands the names of everyone he gave the intel to. Bashir also reveals that he knows his name: Martin Odum of the FBI.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Hassan and some other guys go to Sonya’s house and pull a gun on her and Aiden.
