Again, this weekend there were no surprises at the box office for number one and two. Captain America: Civil War remained at number one again, bringing in about $72.6 million. Violet has to be happy adding this to her totals in the Fantasy Move Draft. Disney also still owns the number two spot, with Jungle Book hauling in just over $17 million.
The new releases this week came in pretty strong given their low budget nature. Money Monster came in at about $14.8 million, taking 3rd place. Violet has to be thrilled with that this week too, given that this movie is the one she picked up to replace her delayed Collide movie. The Darkness, which Michelle also picked up for her replacement movie when one of hers was also postponed, came in at just under $5 million. Also not a bad haul.
I am still marveling at Zootopia, which is still number 6. This movie has made $331 million. So far, its total gross is still ahead of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and looks like it will remain above it! Mother’s Day, as expected, given its terrible reviews, had a 79% drop off, coming in with $3.2 million. The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Keanu seem to be dying out, bringing in a total of $2.6 million and $1.9 million respectively.

Looking to the Movies This Coming Weekend
This coming weekend’s box office looks like it has a possibility to compete with Captain America: Civil War. We have The Angry Birds Movie coming out. Parents could be looking for a movie for their kids to see other than The Jungle Book or Zootopia, and George is hoping it pays off big this week. For those who weren’t sucked in by the game on their smart phone, this film is based on the game of the same name — Angry Birds, where birds with different abilities are loaded into a giant slingshot, and aimed at bad piggies that have kidnapped the bird’s eggs. This movie is a big question mark on how it will do.
George is also hoping that The Nice Guys gets some steam behind it. It is an odd movie premise–Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling star in this 70s era flick, where Gosling plays a detective and Crowe plays some “muscle” and they have to work together to solve a crime. I have some interest in seeing it, but I am not sure it will have a widespread audience. I have a feeling the big names in it are going to be the thing that brings the crowd in, if it does at all
Michelle has a pretty big movie coming out this week–Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. This follows up the original Neighbors movie starring Seth Rogan and Rose Byrne as two suburban Americans who moved into a house that is right next door to a fraternity, led by Zac Efron’s character. This time around, Zac Efron’s character teams up with Seth Rogan’s and Rose Byrne’s characters in order to fight the sorority that moved in next door, led by a character played by Chloe Grace Moretz. The first one was pretty funny, but comedy sequels tend to not have a great track record.

So, this week looks a little tougher than I thought a couple weeks ago! Captain America: Civil War had a significant drop off this week, but that could be because everyone and their mother went to see it opening weekend. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising is probably the biggest contender this week, given that the first movie made $150 million in 2014.
