TV Recap: Supernatural, Season 9 Episode 1: I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here

Supernatural is back for its ninth season! In the Season 9 premiere, titled I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here, Sam is on his deathbed, but Dean tries to save him! Violet provides the recap of this episode, and following the recap, both Violet and Josh provide their thoughts of the episode.

Supernatural Episode Recap: I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here, the Details

Season 9 starts off with the boys driving down the road. Apparently the falling angels are being called a meteor shower. Dean breaks it to Sam that Sam is dying. It turns out that Sam is actually in a hospital bed in a coma with Dean at his side, and that the car scene is all in Sam’s head. Sam’s doctor tells Dean “it’s in God’s hands” and Dean flips out.

Dean goes to the chapel and prays to Cas. He then sends a prayer out to any angel listening: the first one who can help him gets his help in returning.

Back in Sam’s head, Dean tells him he’s working on a plan to save him. Sam wonders if he’s even supposed to be fighting to live. Suddenly, Bobby shows up in the back seat and says that Sam has a point. Bobby criticizes the way the boys cheat death. Dean is the side of Sam that wants to fight to live, while Bobby is the side that wants to let go. Sam gets rid of Dean, and he and Bobby appear in the middle of a forest.

Meanwhile, Cas is walking down the road and almost gets hit by a truck. He dodges out of the way, and his hand starts bleeding. The guy driving the truck gives Cas a ride, drops him off at a gas station, and gives him some money. Cas walks over to the pay phone and demands for a big biker dude to get off the phone. The guy refuses, so Cas tries to use his powers on the guy, but they don’t work. A girl walks up to Cas and says she knows him. Her name is Hale, and she’s an angel.

At the hospital, a woman walks into Sam’s room. Dean asks if she’s an angel, but she’s a grief counselor. She wants to talk to Dean about the inevitable, but Dean says there’s always a way. He remembers he has Crowley in his trunk, so he goes to talk to him, but an angel comes up behind him and puts an angel blade to his throat, saying that Dean will be helping him instead of the other way around.

The angel asks where Castiel is, and begins to beat Dean up. Another angel arrives and stops him. As the two angels fight, the angel blade falls to the ground. Dean picks it up and stabs the first angel from behind, killing him. The other angel says he’s there to help, then passes out.

Hale talks to Cas about the fall, and notices that his grace is gone. He says he can still hear “angel radio” though. Hale says she can hear her brothers and sisters still circling, trying to find vessels. Cas tells her there’s nothing to be afraid of, and now she and other fallen angels can do what they would like to do. Hale says she would like to see a place she built the last time she was on Earth — the Grand Canyon.

Dean traps the angel in a ring of fire and asks his name, which he says is Ezekiel. Ezekiel reveals that there are many angels on their way to hunt Dean due to his open prayer. He also says that some angels still believe in their mission, and therefore believe in Castiel and Dean. Although Ezekiel was hurt in the fall, he offers his remaining strength to Dean.

Meanwhile, in Sam’s mind, he and Bobby are walking through the forest. Bobby tries to tell Sam he needs to let go of fighting, and tries to convince him that it’s not just dying, he would be leaving a legacy.

In Sam’s room, Ezekiel confirms to Dean that he should still have the power to heal, but comments that Sam is so weak. Just then, Dean gets a phone call from Cas, and leaves the hospital room. Cas tells Dean that Metatron tricked him: it wasn’t angel trials, it was a spell. Dean tells Cas that Sam is dying, and asks if he heard his prayers. Cas reveals that Metatron took his grace. Dean tells Cas that Ezekiel has come to help, and Cas confirms that Ezekiel is a good soldier. Dean tries to warn Cas about the angry angels looking for him, and tells him to trust no one, but Cas insists he’s fine. The hospital begins to shake, and Dean tells Cas to get to the bunker, alone.

Dean goes back to Sam’s room, and Ezekiel reports that an angel is trying to secure a vessel. Ezekiel says they have to move Sam, but Dean begins drawing wards on the wall to angel proof the room. Ezekiel senses that the angels have arrived. As Dean leaves the room, he commands Ezekiel to save Sam. Glass begins to break as Dean walks down the hall. He pulls the fire alarm and demands that everyone evacuate.

Back with Cas, he explains to Hale that he has to go on alone, but she hits him in the head with a board, knocking him out. Cas wakes up in the passenger seat of a car which Hale is driving. She has an angel blade on her lap. She reveals that her vessel will not last much longer, and that she plans to invade Castiel’s vessel, which is much stronger.

Bobby brings Sam to a house, which contains everything he’ll need to help him on his way. But Dean shows up and stabs Bobby from behind. Sam tells Dean that it’s over, there’s nothing to fight for. He asks Dean what his plan is. Dean punches Sam in the face and says his plan is to fight, but Dean can’t help Sam if he’s not willing to fight for himself. Sam says it’s okay, it’s what he wants. Dean disappears. Sam enters the house. Death is inside waiting for him.

The grief counselor is now an angel, and she and another angel attack Dean. She demands to know where Castiel is, and threatens Sam’s life. Dean says good luck getting past the warding, but she seems confident they will, as the other angel grabs an ax. She kicks Dean in the face.

The guy angel is about to break down the door to Sam’s room, when Dean stops him and says he’ll tell them where Cas is. But first he asks, “If heaven is locked, then where do you go when I do this?” It turns out he has drawn an angel banishing sigil on the floor using his own blood, and places his palm on it, making the two angels disappear.

Dean enters the room, and finds Sam starting to flatline. Ezekiel admits that he is weaker than he thought, and the warding is also hurting him. Dean goes around the room canceling out the wards by drawing a line through each. Ezekiel says there are no good ways to save Sam, so Dean asks about bad ways. Ezekiel says he could save him from the inside, meaning he would have to possess Sam, but Dean says Sam wouldn’t want that. However, Ezekiel gives Dean a peek into what’s going on inside Sam’s head.

Death says it’s an honor to be collecting Sam Winchester. Sam asks Death to promise that if he goes with him, that this time it’s final, and can’t be undone. Dean realizes that there’s not much time, and asks Ezekiel how the possession would work. Ezekiel explains that he would heal Sam while he heals himself, and once Sam is healed, he would leave. Dean knows Sam would never say yes to Ezekiel, but Ezekiel points out that he would say yes to Dean.

Back with Cas and Hale, Cas notices that she’s not wearing a seat belt. He puts on his seat belt, then jerks the steering wheel, causing the car to crash. Cas gets out of the car, picks up the angel blade, and heads toward Hale, who has flown through the windshield. Cas says he wants to help the angels, but Hale explains that the angels don’t want his help, they want his head. She says she can protect Cas, and threatens to tell the other angels where Cas is if he leaves her. But he stabs her with the angel blade, killing her.

Just as Death is about to take Sam, Dean shows up and says he has a plan. He tells Death it’s not Sam’s time, but Death says that’s for Sam to decide. Dean convinces Sam to live when he refers to the promise he made Sam in the church. Just as Dean lays his hand on Sam to save him, he turns into Ezekiel.

The doctor walks into Sam’s hospital room and sees Ezekiel’s vessel laying on the bed instead of Sam. The doctor asks who he is and what’s going on, but he has no idea.

Meanwhile, Ezekiel is still in Sam’s body, and tells Dean that when Sam wakes up, he will not feel him, and that there’s no reason for Sam to know he’s in there at all. He explains that without Sam’s acceptance, Sam can eject Ezekiel at any time, and if so, Sam will die. Dean agrees to keep it a secret for now. Ezekiel says he can make it so that Sam does not remember any of this.

Cas heads to a laundromat, strips out of his bloody clothes, and puts them into a washing machine. He is about to put the coins in when he spies a vending machine and appears to deliberate what to do with his coins. He exits the laundromat wearing different clothes and chugging down a bottle of water.

As Dean drives, Sam wakes up. Dean tells him he’s been passed out for a day. The last thing Sam remembers is the angels falling. Dean emphasizes what he said at the church, that Sam is capable of anything. Sam says good, because they’ve got work to do.
